Christmas in July!

Image
I picked up this fabric from Wilmington Prints last year, and I love, love, love it so much!  The floral prints fill my heart with joy and the gold text print...just so, so holiday perfect!  I knew I wanted to do some kind of scrappy quilt to bring all these beautiful colors together. I meandered around Pinterest until I found a tutorial from the Missouri Star Quilt Company called "Double Slice Layer Cake".  You can tell it is one of Jenny's earlier tutorials, but, as usual, she simplifies the process for the quilt top.  I just knew I wanted something a bit more random than uniform squares. Here is the link:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxC-0T5lXw4&feature=share So I cut my fabrics into 10" squares, layer cake style, then cut, sewed, cut, and sewed (see the tutorial). This was an easy one for chain piecing. The quilt top came together very quickly.  I find it interesting how the light interacts with these fabric...

Big Block Baby Quilt

Thinking about inspiration...the muse mystifies me.  Here I was, steadily working along on a planned Christmas quilt, all the blocks together and ready for the border to be added to finish the quilt top.   But then I was diverted by a creative urge. My friend texted me that her brand new grand baby was in the hospital and asked me to pray for him.  Maybe it was that time spent in prayer, reflecting on that wee one, that set the gears in motion.  Later, while searching a pile for a particular fabric color, I came across Maureen Cracknell's "Moon Stories in Spark" with the adorable bunny rabbits.   And then, of course, that reminded me of my recent acquisition of Rashida Coleman-Hale's adorable night sky fabric...(I love this print so much, I just ordered another yard). Once I saw the big block tutorials from Kitchen Table Quilting, the idea was suddenly a full visual in my head...baby quilt!  Who is going to stand in the wa...

Superhero Quilt Part Deux

Image
This past year, I completed the superhero quilt for my son.  As usual, I ended up with quite the surplus of extra fabric.  I realized it would go to the scrap pile for an indefinite period of time if I didn't take action this summer while I have the opportunity before school starts.  It helped that I had someone in mind as the recipient, so I got busy with a basic scrap quilt. I just love the kaleidoscope of colors, especially the reds and blues! So I got to cutting...just basic blocks.  I went with an odd 5-3/4" block since I had leftovers from my son's quilt.  That was large enough to capture the comic strip images. I spent one day cutting and filling up the flannel design wall, then started the transfer to my machine with my handy transfer board to stitch up 6X6 block sections at a time. This piecing stage went pretty quickly, thank goodness.  There is some serious gratification in a quick-beginning-to-end quilt project.  Most...
