In the Color Zone



One snowy day this winter during our Christmas break, I sent my two dudes off on a snowshoeing adventure while I hung out with my sewing machine.  I had been eyeing some plus pattern quilts and came across this free pattern from The Cloth Parcel website:  make-this-proof-positive-quilt-tutorial


As luck would have it, I had just picked up a roll of Kaffe Fassett floral fabrics, and the purple batik seemed like it would be a nice background.


I was pretty carried away with the stitching, until a closer inspection revealed some sadly misaligned pluses.  So I spent a bit of time with my trusty seam ripper (grrrrr).  From that point on, I used a fabric pencil to mark the center rectangles so the bottoms of the pluses would align.


I thought this floral border was a nice touch.  I have some pink fabric I am considering for the backing.  It was a satisfying day of quilting.

I think that every quilt is infused with memories--the life events during the creation, the people, the seasons, the motivation--just the process of it all.  I think that the Little Miss Sawtooth quilt along from Southern Charm Quilts and Havel's Sewing  was one of the most pleasant creative journeys I've had with a quilt.  My new favorite!  I love it so much! My initial fabric selection.  I haven't done a fabric pull with past quilts...I generally just start a quilt and then follow where the fabric leads me.  This was fun, because I started to visualize the possibilities from the beginning.  I knew that I didn't want to go the low volume route.  So many in the quilt-along did, and their quilts are lovely, but I needed color.  Burst of vibrant color.  And how could I go wrong with these beautiful floral prints?  Joy! Little Miss Sawtooth--Part Two

The Little Miss Sawtooth journey continued...in no particular order. The further I progressed into the blocks, the more challenging the fabric combo choices became. I think Miss Isla had me the most flummoxed.  She was definitely the most frustrating! Pretty florals, but...no. Love the pretty pink roses, but the turquoise and blues...another no. Setting on the table in the afternoon sun, this one showed some promise... but once I stitched it up, it just seemed so...blah. Then the Amy Butler fabric gave me the "Pssst!" from the shelf while I was perusing star point colors, and...a star is born!  Love Miss Isla! Miss Olivia came together rather quickly without too much indecision.  She started with the blue star points on the flying geese, and I decided to pull a bit of the chartreuse Moda print back in for a pop of color. Sawtooth Stars in the Night Sky

I am in between block pattern releases with the Little Miss Sawtooth Quilt-along hosted by Melanie Traylor of Southern Charm Quilts and Havel's Sewing.  I also have time on my hands with Thanksgiving break in full swing.  Add to that the fact that our school district released all schools two days early last week to combat the unfortunate spread of noro-virus throughout out our schools.  I had already been hit by the two day virus two weeks earlier and wasn't eager to experience another round, so I was quite okay with the early release.  Anyhow...what to do.  I was inspired by a quilt I saw on Instagram that had jewel toned stars placed inside dark blue borders, and I suddenly remembered the sparkling star fabrics I picked up from Joanns Fabrics last summer.  I don't have any solids on hand, so I raided my batik stash.  Even better.
