Searching for that Silver Lining

2020...a year of...life. I've been working hard to find the blessings in this crazy year.  I've managed a whole lot of positives through crafty endeavors and family time, and, thank God, none of us or our family has been infected by Covid 19. Our greatest loss was this fellow. Nine years ago, a parent from the school where my husband and I were teaching convinced him that he was the right person to adopt this puppy, coming from an abusive situation.   I said NO, no, no!  Until I met the little guy. To be honest, it felt like a bit of bait and switch from the time I met him as a squirrelly tiny little furry white creature to two weeks later when this chunky friend came home to us. He and my kid became fast friends, with a whole lot of shenanigans throughout the years. How many dogs do you know who will engage in a light saber battle with you? It's a good thing for a kid to have a furry friend throughout his childhood... Even after work with a trainer, we realized that the ab

Days in Isolation...I've lost count...

This was me at the beginning of spring break....blissfully turning my thoughts away from teaching and grading and towards a plethora of British murder mysteries on Amazon Prime and mindless basting of over 500 Christmas hexies. Part way through that lovely break, the outside world was poking in on us.  Word came down that our district was going to initiate school closure to flatten the curve of the virus.  So the craft joy went away and our two-teacher family turned our focus on revising our fourth quarter units for online instruction.  Stressful, but do-able once I located on-line sources for   The Crucible and The Lord of the Flies that my students could access. Our family has decided to take this Colorado order to self-isolate and stay at home super seriously.  I didn't need much prompting since I have such an unpleasant memory of contracting the Noro-virus that hit our school district in November, forcing an early Thanksgiving closure of all the schools in our distri

Little Miss Sawtooth--Part Two

The Little Miss Sawtooth journey continued...in no particular order. The further I progressed into the blocks, the more challenging the fabric combo choices became. I think Miss Isla had me the most flummoxed.  She was definitely the most frustrating! Pretty florals, but...no. Love the pretty pink roses, but the turquoise and blues...another no. Setting on the table in the afternoon sun, this one showed some promise... but once I stitched it up, it just seemed so...blah. Then the Amy Butler fabric gave me the "Pssst!" from the shelf while I was perusing star point colors, and...a star is born!  Love Miss Isla! Miss Olivia came together rather quickly without too much indecision.  She started with the blue star points on the flying geese, and I decided to pull a bit of the chartreuse Moda print back in for a pop of color. Miss Aliyah went through some transformative stages as well.   Florals, florals, which florals to choose for that

Little Miss Sawtooth- Part One

I think that every quilt is infused with memories--the life events during the creation, the people, the seasons, the motivation--just the process of it all.  I think that the Little Miss Sawtooth quilt along from Southern Charm Quilts and Havel's Sewing  was one of the most pleasant creative journeys I've had with a quilt.  My new favorite!  I love it so much! My initial fabric selection.  I haven't done a fabric pull with past quilts...I generally just start a quilt and then follow where the fabric leads me.  This was fun, because I started to visualize the possibilities from the beginning.  I knew that I didn't want to go the low volume route.  So many in the quilt-along did, and their quilts are lovely, but I needed color.  Burst of vibrant color.  And how could I go wrong with these beautiful floral prints?  Joy! It took me a while to figure out what my background colors would be.  At first I considered a rather tame color scheme.  The stars w
